Overview of UPSC
Establishment
The UPSC, which operates independently of any executive authority, is established under Article 315 of the Indian Constitution. Its primary objective is to ensure fairness and impartiality in the recruitment process as an autonomous body.
Primary Functions:
Administers a range of exams to select candidates for civil services and different positions within the Indian government.
Advises the President and the governors of states on matters related to the recruitment, transfer, promotion, and disciplinary actions of civil servants.
Major Examinations Conducted by UPSC
- Civil Services Examination (CSE):
UPSC seeks individuals to join the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indaian Foreign Service (IFS), and other central services.
– Process: Consists of three stages – Preliminary Examination (objective type), Main Examination (written), and Personality Test (interview)
- Engineering Services Examination (ESE):
- Combined Medical Services Examination (CMS)
- Indian Forest Service Examination (IFoS)
- National Defence Academy & Naval Academy Examination (NDA & NA)
5. Combined Defence Services Examination (CDS)

Structure of UPSC
The Commission is comprised of a Chairman and additional members who are selected by the President of India. While the composition and quantity of members may differ, the usual arrangement consists of a Chairman and a total of ten members.
