Hema committee Report

Hema committee Report

The Hema Committee Report, named after its chairperson Justice Hema, was established to investigate and address issues related to the safety and working conditions of women in the Malayalam film industry. The committee was formed in 2017 by the Kerala government in response to growing concerns about the mistreatment and harassment of women within the industry, especially after a high-profile actress was abducted and assaulted in February 2017.

Key aspects of the Hema Committee Report include:

Harassment and Safety: The report highlights the prevalence of sexual harassment and discrimination against women in the Malayalam film industry. It sheds light on the lack of a safe working environment for women and the power dynamics that often leave them vulnerable to exploitation.

Gender Disparity: The report also discusses the significant gender disparity in the industry, including the unequal pay and limited opportunities for women both in front of and behind the camera.

Recommendations: The committee made several recommendations to improve the working conditions for women in the industry. This includes the establishment of internal complaints committees (ICCs) in production houses, creating awareness about legal rights among women in the industry, and the need for more stringent implementation of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition, and Redressal) Act, 2013.

Industry Reforms: The report calls for broader reforms in the Malayalam film industry to ensure a more inclusive and safe environment for all, regardless of gender.

The Hema Committee Report gained significant attention for bringing to light the challenges faced by women in the entertainment industry in Kerala. However, the full contents of the report have not been made public, leading to some criticism and calls for greater transparency
